Leaving the keys fails to check the car in. On a closed non-airport Enterprise return, skipping the drop-box check can cost you additional charges, and an after-hours return to a closed location leaves you responsible for the vehicle until the next check-in on that Enterprise note and on the Phoenix Sky Harbor Avis page.

An after-hours return counts only when that branch’s own page allows it. On pages read on 11 October 2026, Enterprise’s United States FAQ allows after-hours returns at airport locations and tells non-airport locations to confirm a drop box at pickup; Budget says some locations offer after-hours returns and some do not; the Avis page for Phoenix Sky Harbor describes a key box and a next-business-day check-in when that location is closed; SIXT’s help article says most locations have a key box and that some charge a fee shown on the booking page. None of those pages prints one after-hours dollar amount for every branch. SIXT says the final invoice arrives by email within 48 hours of the return inspection. Record the agreed return time, the time you leave the car, and the check-in time the matching page names. Leave the check-in cell blank when the page is silent.

Check Write this down Leave it blank when
Branch acceptance The sentence on that company’s page for your branch type The company is not one of the four pages below
Check-in time The clock time or “next business day” / “when the location reopens” if the page says it The page never names a check-in time
Fee amount Only a figure printed on the page you are using The page names a fee and prints no number, or names no fee
Key step The motion that page describes The page never mentions a box
Photos and belongings What that page tells you to remove or photograph The page says nothing about either

If the rental also used a Florida toll hangtag or your own transponder, close that method on its own list. The key drop does not return a hangtag. Use the Florida rental car toll close-out for that step.

Does leaving the keys end the rental?

No. Check-in is a later step on the pages that describe it.

Enterprise’s United States FAQ, read 11 October 2026, puts the after-hours rules inside one condition: the location is closed, or you are returning the car to a different location. Under non-airport locations, a car returned after hours is not checked in until the next business day. If you return after hours while that location is closed, you are responsible for the vehicle until a satisfactory check-in the next business day. The airport section of the same FAQ does not print that next-day sentence.

The Avis page for Phoenix Sky Harbor prints the same responsibility line for an after-hours return while the location is closed: the car is checked in when the location opens the next business day, and you are responsible until that check-in. That page also lists the branch as open 24 hours. Both lines are on the page. It does not say which line applies at a given minute.

SIXT’s help article says an after-hours return is processed when the location reopens, and that the final invoice comes by email within 48 hours of the return inspection. Processing is not the moment the key leaves your hand.

Budget’s return page does not say when an after-hours car is inspected. That cell stays blank.

A Booking.com return guide dated 16 October 2025, and still showing that date when read on 14 October 2026, tells you to look for a drop box if no agent is in the lot, and to check the office door if you cannot see a box. It does not name a check-in time, and it does not separate airport branches from neighborhood branches.

A coiled cable and a blank card on an empty gray rear seat.

The Phoenix Sky Harbor Avis after-hours steps say to remove your belongings before you return the keys. The seat in the picture still has a cable and a card on it. That is the thing those steps tell you to clear, not a photo of an Avis car.

What does each company page say about after-hours returns?

Read the row that matches the company and the branch type. A blank cell means that page did not say it. Do not fill the blank from a different row.

Enterprise, United States, airport locations. Applies when the location is closed or you return to a different location. Will allow after-hours returns and has a procedure. Ask that location at pickup what the procedure is. Return to the pickup location unless you arranged otherwise with the original location. Additional drop fee if you drop off at an airport and did not pick the car up at an airport.
Enterprise, United States, non-airport locations. Same closed-or-different-location condition. Return during normal business hours. To return while the renting location is closed, confirm at pickup whether an after-hours service drop box is available. Confirm that box at pickup. The FAQ says doing so helps you avoid additional charges. Not checked in until the next business day. You are responsible for the vehicle until a satisfactory check-in the next business day if you return after hours while the location is closed. Additional charges if you do not confirm the box. The page does not name the charge.
Budget return page. Location by location. Some locations offer after-hours returns. Others do not. Ask that location. At an airport, ask the location to confirm it offers the service, schedule the after-hours return in advance, then leave the keys in the drop box.
Avis at Phoenix Sky Harbor only. Address on the page: 1805 E Sky Harbor Cir South, Phoenix, AZ 85034. Phone on the page: (1) 602-261-5900. The hours line says Sunday through Saturday, open 24 hours, and the page lists “24 hour drop off.” A directions note says the main counter is closed from midnight to 6:00 a.m. and points customers to the Preferred booth on level 1. Lock the car and place the keys in the after-hours key box in the return area. Remove belongings first. When the location opens the next business day, if you returned after hours while it was closed. You are responsible until that check-in.
SIXT help article. No country and no branch are named. Most locations have a key box. Check whether this location has a box or another after-hours option. The late-return section says you can generally return after hours. Park in the designated area. Photograph all four sides, the interior, the mileage, and the fuel gauge, with a timestamp if you can. Lock the car. Put the key in the box. When the location reopens. Final invoice by email within 48 hours of the return inspection. Some locations charge a small after-hours fee. The article says the fee is shown on the booking page.

A car key lying on the lid of a plain metal box

A car key lying on the lid of a plain metal box bolted to a concrete pillar.

The key in that picture is on the lid. It is not inside the box, and the box has no company mark. Avis at Phoenix Sky Harbor and SIXT both describe putting the key in the box. Enterprise’s non-airport FAQ tells you to confirm that a box exists before you rely on one. Budget’s airport lines say to schedule the after-hours return before the keys go in the drop box. Copy the row above, not the picture.

Takeaway: Use one row. A blank amount stays blank until the booking page or the branch prints a number.

What three times should you write down?

The agreed return, the moment you leave the car, and the company’s check-in are three different times. Mixing them is how a key drop gets treated as a finished rental.

Time What to write Where it comes from Leave blank when
Agreed return Date and clock time on the rental agreement Your agreement You do not have the agreement with you
Actual handoff The time you parked, locked the car, and left the key Your own note, written at the lot
Company check-in “Next business day” or “when the location reopens,” plus the 48-hour invoice line if you are on the SIXT row The matching row above That row’s check-in cell is blank

Enterprise airport and Budget have blank check-in cells on the pages read here. Those cards stay blank. Do not copy the non-airport Enterprise sentence or the Phoenix sentence onto a Budget rental or an Enterprise airport rental.

A round gauge glowing green on a dark dashboard

A round gauge glowing green on a dark dashboard. No digits are readable.

SIXT asks for photographs of all four sides, the interior, the mileage, and the fuel gauge, with a timestamp if possible. The gauge above is only a dark dial. It is not a finished mileage or fuel photo. Enterprise, Budget, and the Phoenix Sky Harbor Avis page, as read for this article, do not say that photographs close the rental or waive a charge. The Booking.com guide says the photographs are not required.

How is a late return different from an after-hours return?

After hours means the counter is closed, or the branch told you to use its closed-hours procedure. Late means you kept the car past the time on the agreement. A branch can be open and you can still be late. A branch can be closed and you can still be inside the agreed time. Read both rules.

On the same Enterprise FAQ, an early return in the United States is a third case. Enterprise says it does not charge customers more for returning a car early, and that you are charged only for the days you had the vehicle, excluding prepaid reservations. That sentence is not the after-hours rule, and it does not cancel the closed-location rules above.

Budget’s return page times a rental in 24-hour periods. It says there is a 29-minute grace period, and that a return within 29 minutes past that window is accepted without additional fees. After 30 minutes, it charges an additional hourly rate, plus taxes. The page does not print the hourly amount. The same page says an early return can raise the daily rate, because a longer reservation usually has a lower daily rate, and that the new rate depends on the location and the reservation. It prints no replacement rate.

The Phoenix Sky Harbor Avis page includes rental terms beside the location details. Those terms say vehicles are rented on a 24-hour basis, with a 29-minute grace period. After 30 minutes late, the page states a 3/4-day late charge plus $.01 plus taxes. After 90 minutes late, it states a full-day late charge plus taxes. It also says there is no grace period for rental fees, surcharges, and optional equipment or protection charges, so a full day applies to those items. Those figures are on that location page. This article does not treat them as the late charge at every Avis branch.

SIXT separates the two problems in one help article. A return later than the contract is charged as extra rental days. If you do not tell SIXT in advance, the article says an additional service fee applies, and it does not print the fee. It says telling SIXT before the return time is always cheaper than coming back late without notice, and that a change of date, time, or location arranged in advance carries a small handling fee, again with no amount. The after-hours fee, if that location charges one, is the separate line that the booking page is supposed to show.

Takeaway: Write “late” and “after hours” on two lines. A grace period is not permission to use a closed branch.

What does the Phoenix Sky Harbor Avis page show that a national line does not?

It shows one branch, not the Avis network.

The page lists Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, 1805 E Sky Harbor Cir South, Phoenix, AZ 85034, phone (1) 602-261-5900, hours of Sunday through Saturday open 24 hours, and a “24 hour drop off” label. It also says the main rental counter is closed from midnight to 6:00 a.m., and that the customer should go to the Preferred booth on level 1 of the rental facility. The Sky Train note on the same page says the train is free and runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with stops every 3 to 5 minutes. The car-return line says to return the car to the rental facility and follow the signs to the Sky Train.

None of that is printed on the Enterprise or Budget pages read here, and this article did not open another Avis branch. If your Avis return is not this airport, the Phoenix key-box steps are the wrong instructions.

What if your rental company is not listed?

This page does not state an after-hours rule for any company it did not open. Hertz, National, Alamo, Dollar, and a neighborhood franchise are blank on purpose. Ask that branch before you travel, and write the answer into the three-time card. A box in the parking lot is not a substitute for the row.

The photographs on this page are ordinary lot and interior views. They are not a named company’s branch, and they are not evidence that a return was accepted.

Methods and sources

The company rules above are copied from four public pages read on 11 October 2026. Enterprise’s United States early-return FAQ and Budget’s rental-return page were saved from HTTP responses. The Avis Phoenix Sky Harbor location page was saved the same day; its on-page search form showed 11 October 2026 as a sample pickup date, which is page chrome, not a policy date. SIXT’s help article was read from a saved text capture that day because a direct fetch was blocked. The capture does not name a country, so the booking page still has to confirm the fee and the box.

The Booking.com guide was read live on 14 October 2026. The page date is 16 October 2025. It is a general return article, not a rental company’s rule, and its deposit timing is left out of this page.

No branch was visited, no car was returned, and no invoice was compared. Where a page gives no amount, the amount cell is empty. Nothing here is legal advice, insurance advice, or a promise that a photograph or a key drop ends the charge.
